Garden Suburb Infant School

Archive Governor News

The Junior School has recently undergone an interim OFSTED inspection. Under the new OFSTED framework, schools that are judged to be good or outstanding may undergo a ‘paper’ inspection rather than a full inspection visit. OFSTED’s assessment indicated that the Junior School’s performance has been sustained and there will not be a full inspection before September 2011. A letter from OFSTED is being sent out to Junior School parents.

This year, the Governing Body has been agitating about secondary school provision in this part of Barnet. As some of you will be aware, there are many options but insufficient choice for those families wanting non-selective, non-faith secondary education, particularly for girls. We have been working with other Governing Bodies from the Suburb and East Finchley area to pressure the Local Education Authority into addressing this issue. We have approached Henrietta Barnett School to see if it would consider amending its admissions criteria in some way, and also held meetings with the Senior Leadership Team at Whitefield (now in Trust status with Compton and the University of Middlesex), the head of Christ’s College and Mike Freer MP. This is an ongoing issue and your views, as parents, will be sought as part of any consultation process. For those of you with an interest in Christ’s College, you may be interested in signing the on-line petition at http://e-voice.org.uk/christscollegepfa/

As part of our duties as a Governing Body (and not because we want to encourage complaints!), we are obliged to alert parents to the existence of our Complaints Procedure. In summary, the process is:
• In the first instance, talk to your child’s class teacher
• If you need to take it further, talk to the Head Teacher
• If your concern has still not been resolved, you may wish to consider making a formal complaint
A copy of the full Complaints Procedure and the necessary forms are available from the school office, or more information can be found on the school web-site under ‘Raising a Concern’.

Congratulations to Year 6 and Year 2 on two fantastic shows this term: The Sound of Music and On The Way Home. Thank you to the staff for all the extra effort that went into these productions.

Two new Infant Parent Governors have joined the Governing Body: Julia Sanitt and Sean Lockie. Both have skills which will be extremely useful to the Governing Body and we are very pleased to have them as Governors. I am standing down as Chair of Governors at the end of this term because our family is relocating. It has been an extremely interesting year for me and a privilege to work with the Head Teachers. I have been continually impressed by the level of professionalism and commitment within both schools.
